Get to Know Your Home: DIY Workshops Are Back at Building Value

Let’s be honest: houses are complicated.

Behind every wall is a maze of framing, plumbing, electrical wiring, insulation and other systems. Above your head are roofs, gutters and HVAC equipment. Under your feet are floors, foundations and—especially in an older Cincinnati home—probably a few surprises.

And while many of us are perfectly capable of learning how to fix things, we’re rarely given the opportunity to learn how our homes actually work in the first place.

That’s where our friends at Do It Yourself Darlin come in.

This fall, DIYD is bringing a full slate of practical, accessible home-maintenance and repair workshops to locations throughout Greater Cincinnati—including two September workshops right here at Building Value.

Two Ways to Get Hands-On at Building Value

First up is Drywall Repair (and Tips on Plaster) with Andrew Hall, happening Saturday, September 12th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

If you’ve ever stared at a hole in your wall and thought, “I should probably fix that…” this one’s for you.

Andrew will walk participants through the process of repairing damaged drywall, starting with understanding how framing works behind the wall. Participants will learn how to prepare or remove damaged drywall, patch or replace it, apply drywall mud and sand the repair smooth. The workshop will also cover tips for patching and repairing plaster walls using drywall materials.

Then, on Saturday, September 19th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., it’s time for Houses 101 with Rhett Harkins: Demystify Your Home.

This lecture-style workshop is designed for new homeowners, prospective homeowners and longtime homeowners alike. Rhett will break down the major systems that make a house work—including plumbing and gas, electrical, roofing and gutters, wall assemblies and framing, foundations, windows and doors, HVAC and key appliances.

A Community of People Who Know How to Do Things

Building Value is just one piece of a much larger Cincinnati community supporting Do It Yourself Darlin’s mission.

Throughout September and into the fall, DIYD is partnering with organizations and businesses across the region to bring practical skills education to different communities and spaces.

That includes workshops at the Cincinnati ToolBank Training Center, where participants can learn electrical, plumbing, power-tool and woodworking skills; Wyoming Fine Arts Center, where DIYD has hosted real-life repair projects; 2701SG; and Ace Hardware of Deer Park.

We love seeing that network grow.

Because learning how to use a drill, patch drywall, understand your electrical system or identify what’s happening behind a wall isn’t just about home improvement. It’s about confidence. And that confidence can make a huge difference.
