Building Value Partners with Pump Hair Salon for Sustainable Deconstruction

Building Value, a social enterprise of Easterseals Redwood specializing in sustainable deconstruction and workforce development, has been chosen by Pump Hair Salon to deconstruct its Rookwood Commons location. Pump Hair Salon reached out directly to Building Value because of the organization’s unique approach: salvaging as much material as possible from each project while providing hands-on job training to individuals entering the construction trades.

We were honored that Mitchell’s chose to partner with us on this project,” said Sheryl Woodhouse, Director at Building Value. “Their forward-thinking approach to deconstructing the salon was win-win-win, creating benefits for everyone involved. By working with us, they not only received exceptional service from our team—who completed the work ahead of schedule at a competitive rate—but realized significant tax benefits as well.”

Pump Hair Salon’s deconstruction comes as the business transitions its operations — deciding not to renew its Rookwood Commons lease, the Pump name will now be absorbed into its parent company, Mitchell’s Salon and Day Spa, a Cincinnati institution since 1983 with five locations, 300 employees, and a reputation for exceptional service.

“You can still see your favorite Pump Salon stylist at Mitchell’s,” said Mike Batchelor of Mitchell’s Salon and Day Spa. “We’re excited for this next chapter while honoring the connections our clients have with their stylists.”

Through the deconstruction project, Building Value will carefully dismantle and salvage reusable materials from the salon, diverting them from landfills and making them available for resale at its Northside store. Proceeds from these sales support Building Value’s mission to provide paid job training in construction skills for people facing economic disadvantages.

“In the process of doing business, they contributed to environmental sustainability by diverting valuable materials from the landfill and provided meaningful hands-on learning experiences for our crew,” said Sheryl Woodhouse. “We’re extremely grateful for Mitchell’s trust in our services and for their commitment to responsible business practices.”
