Creating Opportunity Through Construction

Building Value’s Hard Hat Bash celebrates community partnerships that create opportunity for lower-income Cincinnatians to train for in-demand careers in the construction industry.

Proceeds benefit Easterseals’ Building Value pre-apprenticeship program. Now in its 16th year, Building Value is a pioneer and innovator in construction workforce development.

Building Value combines paid work experience, on-the-job skills development, and comprehensive case management. On-site case management is critical to identifying what might be holding someone back from full time employment, such as issues with transportation, housing, child care, or not completing high school.

Trainees are able to address and manage these issues while earning an income, developing their skills and talents, and making professional connections through Building Value’s partnership with Messer Construction.

Building Value trainees typically complete the program in about six months and advance to paid apprenticeships where they focus on building their skills in a trade they have developed a passion for, creating a much-needed talent pipeline for the construction industry.

The AMORE Gallery and Auction

A highlight of Building Value’s Hard Hat Bash is the return of the AMORE (Art Made of Reusable Elements) Gallery and Auction. Selected artists and makers are challenged to upcycle materials from Building Value’s retail store in Northside into high-end showpieces.

The materials are sourced from Building Value’s deconstruction operations, part of the pre-apprenticeship workforce development program. Trainees learn trade skills, tool handling, job site safety, and teamwork while systematically taking apart structures slated for demolition.

Over the past 16 years, Building Value has salvaged more than 6,000 tons of reusable construction materials that otherwise would have gone into a landfill. The retail store offers the public the opportunity to purchase these materials, including kitchen cabinets, appliances, architectural trim, windows, and lumber.

For the AMORE designer challenge, artists put their creativity to the test to transform salvaged items into a new use. Past collections have included a singer sewing machine and chandelier that became a large-scale bird sculpture, an upright piano that became a bar, and scrap lumber that became intricate wall art.

All items in the AMORE Gallery will go up for auction at Building Value’s Hard Hat Bash.
